Business Class A380 Singapore Airlines – After experiencing the new Singapore Airlines A380 Suites earlier this year, I was looking forward to seeing how it has improved their business class product. Personally, I wasn’t a big fan of the old A380 business class seat because it was too wide for my frame, even with padded pillows on both sides I could never be comfortable.
So, for an upcoming trip to Europe, I decided to book with Singapore Airlines specifically to try the new A380 in business class in Singapore and the A350 in Dusseldorf.
Business Class A380 Singapore Airlines
The newest aircraft has six First Class suites and 78 Business Class seats on the entire upper deck. With 44 main economy and 343 Economy seats on the lower deck. Older planes will be gradually redesigned with the latest products by 2020.
Singapore Airlines Brings Most Luxurious Plane To New York: Travel Weekly
The newest aircraft currently flies between Singapore and Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Zurich and London. The team was very tight-lipped about what direction the new product will see next.
The plane, 9V-SKZ, was the newest of the Singapore Airlines A380s and had only been built in February so it still had that new aircraft smell.
The cabin has been beautifully designed by the UK’s JPA Design and features a modern color palette of dark purple seats, brass accents and light gray shells around the seats. The design is a nice departure from the brown-on-surface cabin of previous generations.
The Business Class cabin is arranged in a 1-2-1 layout over two cabins. There are 50 seats in the first cabin and the other 28 in the smaller rear cabin. There are no bins above the middle seats which makes the cabin feel very spacious even though there are 50 passengers.
Singapore Airlines Introduced New Double Beds In Business Class, With More Storage Space Than Ever
My cabin bag easily fits in the storage area of my seat so I didn’t have to store anything in the overhead bin.
There are four toilets located between the cabins, but despite the illuminated sign at the front of the cabin indicating this, passengers continue to walk up to the front of the aircraft and into to the gallery.
The seats are five inches narrower than the previous generation seats and are upholstered in Poltrona Frau leather with two side wings for better back support.
The copper color is used in the bench next to the seat, ambient lighting in the seat shell, printed cushion cover, around the drink tray and the storage compartment.

Those who like window seats will find one of the hidden windows behind the large privacy shell so you have to lean forward if you want a view from the front window.
The adjacent bench provides space to store personal items, drinks, or your laptop if you want to jump out of the seat. Along with this is the remote IFE touchscreen, headphone jack, USB socket and vanity mirror.
Above this is a hook for storing headphones when not in use, and provides noise canceling headphones. There is also a directional reading light.
Next to the seat are the adjustment knobs and a flip-up arm. I found the buttons to be very sensitive and accidentally called the crew several times and accidentally moved the seat.
A ‘double Bed’ In Biz: A Review Of Singapore’s Brand New A380 Business Class
When it’s time to sleep, the seat slides all the way down into a flat bed instead of popping out and turning like the previous generation seat and the seat on the Airbus A350 .
Three days before departure when all the seats are unlocked online, I noticed that the cabin was only 70% full, so I decided to take a gamble and sit myself in the window seat bulk head and my partner across the aisle to the middle head seat. I didn’t think anyone would choose to sit next to my companion considering the other empty seats in the cabin. Fortunately the gamble paid off and I was able to test both the premium large head window and the middle seat.
All the seats face forward, but the big difference is the position of the footwell, and its size. All window seats have a footrest under the seat bench in front of the window. Surprisingly, the bulkhead window seat does not have a wider bench like the other Singapore Airlines seats.
In the middle seats you will find the footrest on the side of the aisle. However, the A380 has three pairs of valuable large headrests that have a wide bench for your feet.

The middle seats have a privacy section with three heights depending on how close you want to be to the person next to you; all the way down to seat level if you’re traveling with your partner, just below shoulder level if you’re traveling with a family member/friend/colleague, or all the way up if you don’t know the person.
Before taking off I was offered a choice of a glass of Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve Champagne (average AUD$100 a bottle on the ground), water or orange juice.
Singapore Airlines does not provide a choice of meals and on this flight they served smoked salmon and a Waldorf salad. My partner is not a seafood eater but he loved this dish too.
A week before I left I saw the flight schedule and the Book-the-Cook option through the Singapore airline website. The Braised Barramundi Fillet in Chili Garlic Sauce from the flight menu looked good so I stuck to a pre-selection of food but my partner chose the Beef Fillet from the Cook Book menu.

My barramundi was cooked perfectly, and the garlic and chilli sauce gave it a great flavour.
For dessert I couldn’t pass up the Tiramisu and as my companion I enjoyed the Salty Pistachio Praline Ice Cream.
Two hours before arriving in Singapore, a renewal service began. We both chose the Mezze Tasting Plate with hummus, Fatosh salad, beef kofta and pita bread. It was a good portion for this part of the flight and was very tasty, but the piece started to turn cardboard as it cooled.
Singapore is known for its flight service and Renee and her crew on this flight went above and beyond. I didn’t have to use the bell once, they anticipated when we needed a drink refill and the interactions were genuine without any false excitement.

Even though it wasn’t on the menu, we asked if they could make us an espresso martini and they delivered. They were very proud of their latest aircraft and gave us a tour explaining that most teams move between all classes and types of aircraft and that is why they provide such amazing service no matter how you fly on Singapore Airlines.
A large 18-inch HD touchscreen directly in front of each passenger features a robust selection of movies, TV shows, audiobooks, music tracks and podcasts.
You can control the IFE using the touch screen, remote or the latest Singapore Airlines smartphone app which can be linked to your seat number.
Singapore Airlines now provides free internet for First Class and Business Class passengers, but with only 100 MB for First Class passengers and 50 MB for Business Class passengers, make sure that you turn off all background data usage or use your allowance in small amounts. while

Singapore Airlines WiFi pricing is also data-free with plans exceeding three hours and limited to 150 MB.
Singapore Airlines does not provide toiletries and instead stocks toiletries and toothbrushes. You will find socks, slippers and an eye mask waiting for you at your table.
I bought 105,000 Krisflyer Miles per person for this flight about eight months before I left on SQ232 to Singapore and on SQ338.
However, Singapore Airlines prefers its own members to partners such as Velocity. If the flight you want is only available through KrisFlyer and not Velocity (which sometimes happens), you can transfer 141,750 Velocity points to 105,000 KrisFlyer miles, which you can then can be used to order through KrisFlyer.

Note: Transfer rates between Velocity and Krisflyer will increase by approximately 15% from January 2019. Read more here.
You can also get a free or free stopover when you book through KrisFlyer and travel from Singapore, even if your flight is with another Star Alliance partner. Here are our top five tips for a stopover in Singapore.
The only flexible reward points in New Zealand that you can earn and convert to Krisflyer or Velocity are American Express Membership Rewards.
If the flight is not available through one of the programs, you can select a ‘waitlist’ through KrisFlyer, as long as you have enough points at the time of your request. At any time before the flight, they can notify you of availability and allow you to proceed with a reservation.
Singapore Airlines First & Business Class Seat Guide
All business class passengers can access the Singapore Airlines or Air New Zealand Lounges at Sydney Airport prior to departure. I personally recommend going to the Air NZ lounge for one of their fantastic espresso martinis first!
The new seat is a huge improvement on its old A380 and A350 seats thanks to the flexibility it gives passengers in the middle seat, more privacy, extra storage, narrower width and nice styling.
I was lucky enough to get the bucket seat which gives passengers more legroom than the other seats, so I can’t comment.
